My TOP TEN Photographers on YouTube

Over the years, I can safely say, that I have spent MANY hours on YouTube learning about travel and photography. During that time a lot has been learnt about how to improve my photography and make the journey more pleasurable. Be warned, most of these YouTubers (not all) are landscape, travel, and adventure photographers and therefore the lessons are presented in a non-technical format during their adventure. By watching them present their craft in this format many lessons are discovered - including some of which may not have intended. Enjoy!!!

  1. Thomas Heaton - Quote from his website, “I love it! I just love it. The camera has truly changed my life and opened up my world. I am very self conscious and an introvert. Travelling by myself or even going for a wander to explore an ancient woodland always made me feel a bit… well, a bit of a loner. As soon as I had a camera in my hand, my travels and my wanders had purpose! The camera was the missing piece of the puzzle. All of my anxieties about being out for no reason were gone. Of course I couldn’t see it then, but I see now that I simply wanted to be outdoors and exploring”.

  2. Gavin Hardcastle (fototripper) - Quote from his website, “I’m Gavin Hardcastle, the creator of Fototripper. Landscape Photography is an all-consuming passion for me and I love to share my knowledge and shenanigans on the Fototripper Youtube channel. I offer several photography courses from composition right through to image post-processing”.

  3. Brendan van Son - Quote from his website, “I’ve been living the nomadic life for 9 years and have visited over 100 countries – and have lived in many of them. My work as a travel photographer has been featured by major publications such as The Guardian, The BBC, The Toronto Star, Nat Geo Traveler, and many more. I’ve had the opportunity to work with clients like AXE, Travel Alberta, Volkeswagen, SanDisk, Canon, Marriott, and many others”.

  4. Morten Hilmer - Quote from his website, “Starting in 2005, I served two years in one of the Danish military special forces, the Sirius Patrol.  I have spent two further years in the northern parts of Greenland meeting the local people and working on photography projects. My driving force is a sense of adventure, my fascination for nature and my curiosity and empathy for other cultures.  From the indigenous peoples of South America to Greenlanders in the northernmost settlements, it has led me to many remote regions”.

  5. Fstoppers (Patrick Hall and Lee Morris) - Quote from their website, “Fstoppers is an online community aimed at educating and inspiring photographers, videographers, and creative professionals.  Started in 2010 by founders Patrick Hall and Lee Morris, Fstoppers has grown into one of the top resources for photography lighting, gear reviews, business tips, behind the scenes, and industry news”.

  6. Adam Gibbs - Quote from his website, “I enjoy photography, and I especially cherish the opportunity to experience the subjects that I photograph. The act of hiking to a location and merely setting up a camera and taking a few images is what I enjoy about photography. To watch the beautiful light on a snowbound peak or camp in an alpine meadow surrounded by wildflowers are the things that draw me to photography, not the other way around. For me, photography is an extension of the outdoor experience, nothing more, nothing less”.

  7. Peter McKinnon - Quote from his website, “Peter McKinnon is an internationally acclaimed photographer, filmmaker, YouTube creator and entrepreneur based in Toronto, Canada. Peter uses his platforms to inspire and help people pursue their passions behind the lens. In 2019 he was named Breakout YouTuber of the Year at the Shorty Awards and in 2020 received a Streamy for Cinematographer of the Year. Peter’s work can be found in a number of outlets but a notable personal achievement for this Canadian was having his work featured on two special collection coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint”.

  8. Brandon Woelfel - Quote from his website, “Photography and art have a huge impact on the world. Communicating across various cultures, we’re able to break through language barriers and share our experiences through images. I think it’s important to note that if you truly love what you do, then achievements will follow. Working every day to realize that you can always improve will keep you ahead of the game.”

  9. Julia Trotti - Finally one of the girls, they are few and far between - and I have looked… Here is a quote from her website, “Julia Trotti founded Digital Film Actions mid-2012. Julia Trotti is a professional fashion photographer based in Sydney, with a love for natural light and beautiful colours. Her work has taken her overseas to shoot for clients in London, Ireland and nationally throughout Australia”.

  10. All the others - Nigel Danson, Andy Mumford, Mads Peter Iversen, Nick Page, and MANY MORE…

I hope this has given you a great place to start, or progress, your photography journey. Do you have a favourite that you think should be on the list?
